The Christmas festivities are fast approaching and everyone knows the best part about Christmas is the food!
December is the month that while most things go into hibernation, the brussel sprouts and mince pies venture out. Where do they even go for the rest of the year? Has anyone ever wondered how these iconic foods become associated with Christmas in the first place?
According to tradition mince pies originated as meat pies. They were invented as a way to use up leftovers and the meat was traditionally mixed with dried fruits, sugar and spices to stretch further. Over time people came to their senses and replaced the meat with suet and alcohol leading to a creation of legendary status. By the 16th century the mince pie had risen to unbeatable Christmas fame in the UK.
